 An Autobiographic Personal Statement
- Liela Shadmani

I came to Syracuse with years of lived experience, 23 of them in the Army, where I led, taught, failed, adapted, and led again. I’ve trained Soldiers in complex, high-pressure environments where instruction wasn’t theoretical, it was survival. But somewhere along the way, I realized that instinct, experience, and leadership weren’t enough. If I wanted to design learning that actually changed people, not just prepared them for a task, I needed to go deeper. The M.S. in Instructional Design, Development, and Evaluation gave me the structure and vocabulary to elevate what I already knew in my bones: that instruction should be human-centered, feedback-driven, and purpose-built. I didn’t just complete assignments, I built systems. I created an original instructional model that anchored Army leadership to real learning science. I designed a Rise course that trained Soldiers on the Military Decision-Making Process using scenario-based learning, voiceovers, and visual scaffolding that respected both their time and their cognitive load. This capstone isn’t just a culmination, it’s a confirmation. Of who I am as a leader, a designer, and a builder of learning experiences that hold under pressure. Every artifact in this portfolio reflects the belief that training should do more than inform, it should transform. And if I’ve done my job right, that transformation starts not with the content, but with the learner.

In loving memory of SGM Benito Canales
